Stomach ulcers are caused by bacteria called Heliobacter Pylori, which leads to a break in the lining of the stomach. Stomach ulcers are not caused by stress, smoking and diet like once believed, but while these lifestyle choices do not cause stomach ulcers, they can induce or worsen the symptoms. For those who suffer from this ailment, it can be difficult to find a diet that does not exacerbate symptoms. There are foods that should be eliminated from the diet, as well as foods that should be included to help reduce symptoms. Furthermore, those with stomach ulcers should avoid some habits.
Doctor recommends a Stomach Ulcer Diet
Some doctors recommend eating six small meals a day to decrease the amount of acid in the stomach, but for some eating too often can increase acid. It is best to stick to three meals a day and small healthy snacks at least twice daily. Pepper, chili powder, and hot peppers should be avoided as they could irritate the stomach lining.
Caffeine can increase stomach acid, so teas, sodas, cocoa and chocolate should be avoided as well as both decaf and regular coffee. Fatty foods, tomatoes, tomato juice and citrus juices should be eliminated because they cause heartburn.
Of course, everyone is different and while some of these foods might increase symptoms in some, it will not in others. Once you know, what foods cause an increase your symptoms it should be easy to avoid them.
Stomach Ulcer Diet Foods
Foods to include in your diet are important as well. Include foods high in fiber like cooked dry beans, whole grains, fresh fruits and raw vegetables. A high protein diet is helpful. Plain mild cheese or cottage cheese, and nonfat or low fat milk are a good source of protein.
In addition, lean meats like poultry, fish, pork and beef can be included as good sources of protein. Limit seasonings like onion, garlic, cloves and cinnamon if they cause stomach upset. Drinks such as caffeine free drinks and low acid juices like apple and pear are allowable if tolerated.
Smoking should be avoided and try to reduce stress as much as possible. Do not lie down immediately after eating as this could cause heartburn. It is a good idea to eat at least three hours before bedtime.
Certain medication, such as antacids can be helpful, but following a diet designed to decrease gastric irritation and reduce excessive acid should help to lessen symptoms and side effects like heartburn.
